CP Hire has been selected as the primary supplier for both self-drive & operated plant hire, as part of a restoration project based in Cardiff City Centre. The development began back in February 2022 to uncover a section of the canal that hasn’t been seen for over 70 years.
From a 19th-century dock feeder canal, the 70-metre section will evolve into a miraculous central canal quarter feature. The development scheme, with Knights Brown as the main contractor, is expected to cost 6 million pounds, and incorporates the construction of:
- Two footbridges
- A cantilevered stage
- Rain gardens to manage drainage
Constructed in the 1830s, the stretch was originally used to offer a continuous supply of water to the Bute docks. This enabled large container ships to dock in Cardiff even at low tide and helped to make it a leading port for iron ore and coal.
Since 1950, the canal has been covered up. However, 72 years on this is being reinstated to help reduce traffic in the city centre and manage surface water drainage. The canal is also expected to create a new water habitat, with a new cycleway also being developed in Station Terrace including wider pavements, and improved crossings.

“We are delighted to secure preferred supplier status for such a high-profile project based on our previous supply history with Knights Brown. We are looking forward to the end results, and how much they will enhance the city centre. It’s an exciting project to be involved in”
